FILMS

Biodegradable and Compostable Films
Mater-Bi® film leaves no trace. It is both biodegradable and compostable and can be used in variety of applications from agriculture to finished packaging products. Mater-Bi® is the name of a family of biopolymers that have natural components.

Ready for traditional machinery.
Mater-Bi® can be made into film using traditional LPDE machines but with lower extrusion temperatures and with the possibility of recycling the scraps using similar techniques to those used for PE. Different film grades are available for specific applications e.g. bags, shopping bags, mulching films, packaging and hygiene products.

Easy to print on, quick to seal.
Mater-Bi® film can be printed on using water or solvent-based inks, with any type of printing technique and without the need for crown treatment. In the manufacture of bags, sealing is similar to that of PE and can be done just as quickly.

Great productivity, natural permeability.
The productivity of Mater-Bi® when making films and joining is identical to that of traditional materials, with a similar amount of scraps. The permeability of Mater-Bi® film to water vapour is much greater than that of PE and is similar to that of micro-perforated PE. Unlike perforated PE it forms a biological barrier to viruses and bacteria.

Ideal for the shopping and for separate waste collection.
One of the best known products made of Mater-Bi® is bags for separate waste collection. The same production technique is used to make bin liners and shopping bags that can be reused to collect organic waste.

Mater-Bi® in the environment.
Educating and sensitising the public is the best and most powerful way of safeguarding the environment. Dropping litter uncontrollably must be seen by everyone as something that is socially unacceptable, that harms not only society, but also the person who does it.

Today, correct environmental behaviour is supported by the availability of biodegradable plastic materials made manufactured by Novamont. In fact, Mater-Bi® is not only biodegradable in composting but also at room temperature, it also meets the UNI 11183 standards (Room-temperature biodegradable plastic materials – Test requirements and methods).

Within a variable period of time, depending on the climatic and environmental conditions, Mater-Bi® tends to biodegrade naturally. This is why it has been chosen by a number of Italian tourist resorts e.g. in order to preserve its sea park the Island of Ustica has forbidden the introduction of non-biodegradable bags onto the market.

Leading role in post-consumption.
In order to maintain post-consumption compostability and thereby increase the quality and practicality of the products, multi-coupled moulding has recently been developed for the production of disposable tableware, such as plates and paper cups laminated with Mater-Bi®.

It adores children …
The purpose of using Mater-Bi® in babies’ nappies is to increase the well-being of children: the fluff is contained in a soft and silky Mater-Bi® film which, thanks to its permeability, protects the child from irritations and keeps it drier (as shown by hypoallergenicity and biocompatibility tests carried out at the Dermatology Clinic of the “Maggiore” Hospital in Novara, Italy, in collaboration with the Department of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, of the “Piemonte Orientale” University).

… and the home.
Mater-Bi® film is also used as an external wrapping for toilet paper, kitchen rolls, serviettes and tissues. Thanks to its environmental crudentials the use of Mater-Bi® in this sector is particularly recommended when recycled paper is used.

Probably the best solution in Agriculture.
Compared to traditional films, Mater-Bi® mulching film has demonstrated excellent performance standards but with one important advantage: it does not have to be removed from the land; it biodegrades into the soil without any harmful effects, as shown by special laboratory tests. In addition, Mater-Bi® mulch film is effective at much lower thicknesses than traditional mulch films thus saving large quantities of material.
